Affiliate Marketing For Beginners (I Made a Sale With Clickbank)

In this affiliate marketing for beginners tutorial, you are going to discover how to make your first affiliate commission even if you haven’t made any sales with affiliate marketing before.

To prove to you this method works here is the screenshot of my Clickbank account. I was able to make $50++ on Clickbank by utilizing this method.

Although it’s not that much, however as a complete beginner this sales breakthrough can motivate you to achieve more sales down the road.

You are going to discover my real case study and a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it.

I will reveal to you everything I did in this case study so that you can start making money with affiliate marketing right after finishing reading this post.

This is not a post that only shows you what to do without showing you how to do it. I’m going to walk you through the entire process so that you can have your affiliate marketing campaign up and running.

Most importantly I’m showing you the proven method that I’ve used to make affiliate commissions.

How everything works

I’m assuming you already know what affiliate marketing is. But just in case you haven’t you can read more about what affiliate marketing is all about here.

If you are struggling to find the easiest and proven method to make money with affiliate marketing trust me you are not alone. I was once in your shoes.

I’ve tried many ways to promote affiliate offers but none of them work. Sometimes I felt like those people who crush it in affiliate marketing are downright scams. I tried:

  • Quora
  • YouTube
  • Facebook group
  • Forum
  • Facebook ads

Until one day I stumbled across a video on YouTube that teaches how to make money with affiliate marketing with Instagram.

Initially, I was a bit skeptical but when I went through the video I was amazed at how a simple method actually works.

It was a very straightforward method which is also known as direct marketing. Basically, it was about promoting it through Instagram paid shoutout.

If you haven’t heard about it before, Instagram paid shoutout is to hire an Instagram influencer to promote your affiliate offer on their bio or story or both.

As simple as that.

I never thought this super simple method actually works until I tried it myself and you can see the result as I showed above.

Yes, it’s going to require you a little bit of investment upfront but if you do it right (which is what I'm going to show you) you will be in profit.

The most important thing is you don’t need any skill or experience prior to doing it. Let’s get started!

But in case you are interested to know how to start affiliate marketing with no money click here to discover.

The Offer

In this case study, I was promoting the Clickbank product. Essentially you are free to choose whatever affiliate marketing platforms you want.

There are so many affiliate marketing platforms out there that you could potentially make a lot of money with. To just name a few:

  • Digistore24
  • Warriorplus
  • JVzoo
  • Share a sale
  • Skillshare
  • Fiverr
  • Amazon associates

However be sure to choose the affiliate marketing platforms that could give you the most commission and high quality product.

I chose Clickbank because it has been around for almost 20 years now. So there’s no issue in terms of credibility and most importantly the vast majority of Clickbank products will pay you 75% of commissions.

Means that if the product you were promoting is $100 you are going to get $75 commission every time people purchase from you.

Although you can choose whatever product you want to promote, if you want to make the most commission I recommend you to only promote digital products.

On average, you could make around 50% to 75% of the commission. In some cases, the vendor can even give you 100% of commissions if you are consistent and bring them sales.

That's an insane amount of commission! It’s impossible to get 100% commission with a physical product.

This is because there’s no cost involved to create a digital product. There’s no production, inventory, or shipping cost. That’s why the product owner can give you a high percentage of commissions.

The offer that I promoted was the Easy Cellar. This offer is under survival niche on Clickbank. Although it’s not a top niche on Clickbank I’m glad it still converts.

As you can see I will get $50.87 for each sale. Since I was using paid shoutout, it’s crucial to ensure that the commission per sale exceeding the cost that I’m going to pay (I’ll talk more about that later)

Before I decided to pick this offer up I was actually interested in promoting a health and fitness niche which is a weight loss product.

For your information, the health and fitness niche is one of the most profitable niches apart from wealth and relationships.

However, most of the shoutout prices in the health and fitness niche were a bit pricey.

That was why I chose the survival niche since the price is acceptable and the page engagement rate pretty good (talk about the engagement rate later.

One tip that I can give you when it comes to choosing the right product is you can also choose a product that is related to the current trend.

At the time of promoting this product, we have just been hit with a pandemic. So I thought some people may be looking to build their own root cellar for the emergency.

How to Choose the Instagram Page

Since I was using Instagram to promote this offer I need to ensure there’s a demand for this particular niche. So what I did was I went to Instagram and type in survival.

As you can see once I typed in the survival keyword there were a bunch more survival pages showing up. What I do next is simply click on the first page.

Once you land on the page, click the dropdown button beside the follow button to see what are the suggested pages.

These are the pages that have a similar niche to the one that you just clicked. So it saves a lot of time instead of going to find it one by one.

So what I’m going to do next is I will analyze each page to see which pages have the highest engagement.

Analyze the page engagement

Analyzing Instagram page engagement is very crucial in order to ensure that every dollar you invest is worth it.

You need to know that this is a direct marketing method. The conversion rate for this method is only 1% to 2%.

This means for every 100 clicks you get, you can expect only 1 or 2 sales. If the clicks aren’t quality you probably are not going to get any sales even if you can get 500 clicks.

By analyzing pages we can eliminate the fake Instagram pages that buy the followers from random websites or bot followers.

There are so many pages like this where they will give you a very cheap price but the followers are not quality at all.

These pages are literally making money from selling shoutouts even though they knew it first hand the followers are fake. I have no idea what they are thinking =(

There are two ways on how to analyze the Instagram page engagement rate which are manual and automatic.

For the sake of saving your time, I will only share with you the fastest and easiest way. Continue reading.

Instagram engagement rate calculator

Inbeat is an engagement rate calculator where it helps you to analyze the page engagement rate, average likes for every post, and comments per 1000 likes for any page that you want to analyze.

It’s very useful because it helps you to accelerate and facilitate the entire analyzing process. What you need to do is simply paste any page name that you want to analyze.

This was the data I got when I typed in Survival.hack username in the search box.

There are three indicators that you could see here however the most important to look at is the percentage of engagement rate.

It literally means the overall engagement rate for this particular page including likes and comments.

If you scroll down a bit more you could see each engagement rate post. You can get a rough idea of whether or not the page that you are analyzing is engaging.

Inbeat has two types of accounts which are free and paid. Obviously, you can get more data and features with the paid version but for me, the free version is already good enough if you just started out.

Because the only data we need here is the engagement rate.

To give you a reference here is the Instagram average engagement rate standard by Planx you can follow to dictate the engagement rate.

In this case study you can see the page I analyzed has 65.5 followers with only 1.42% of the engagement rate.

Based on the Planx standard it should be at least 2.15%. So obviously this page’s engagement rate doesn’t meet the standard.

So what I’m going to need to do is analyze other pages that have good engagement rates so that I can increase the chances of getting a sale.

How many pages?

As many as possible until you find the best. You need to remember that this method requires some capital. So you don’t want to waste any dime working with a nonprofitable page.

If I’m not mistaken I’ve analyzed about 20+ pages until I came across this one.

This page has 148.7k followers with a 2.70% engagement rate. So in terms of the engagement rate, it’s pretty good. So I shortlisted this page into my list.

In total, I’ve had 8 pages shortlisted. What I was doing next was DMing each of them to get their shoutout’s prices.

A couple of them replied to me with their price and after went through each of them I chose Bushcraft based on:

  • Highest engagement rate
  • Most of the traffic is from the USA
  • Most of the traffic is men

A tip that I want to give you here before you promote the affiliate offer you need to know who is your audience.

In this case study, I was promoting a root cellar product. It’s a DIY type of product and obviously, the targeted audience is men.

Knowing your targeted audience is very crucial in order to make sure you are choosing the right Instagram page.

I also want to show this offer to the US market only because that is the market that could bring you high-quality traffic.

In comparison to other countries, the US market so far has the highest purchasing power.

But if you can’t get the US traffic, you can try to get to the UK, Canada, or Australia. Generally, you need to find the first-tier countries to get the best result.

So how to get that data? Simply by asking them. Let’s see what is the thing that you need to be asking in your DM.

Start DM the pages

Start your DM with a headline that can grab their attention. The reason why is that you want them to open your DM and read the entire message.

The admin may receive a bunch of messages a day so if you don’t write a grabbing attention headline I’m afraid your message is not going to be read.

You can start with something along the line of:

  • Business opportunity
  • JV partner
  • Shoutout quote
  • Shoutout price

As you can see I started with the Business inquiry headline (forgive me for the typo there lol) and I put some money emoji there just to make it a bit more interesting.

So whatever you want to put in your headline please be sure it could grab people’s attention.

The rest of the message is just simply explaining what you need from them.

Don’t forget to tell them that you are a serious buyer so they will be more likely to reply back to you because obviously, you have what they need too which is money.

The price

Before I continue any further I’ll always look at the price. I just want to work with a page that could give me more value.

So based on the price above I’m quite satisfied because the price included the link and story.

You need to pay close attention to the price because some pages do not include the link. For me personally, it doesn’t make sense at all.

Why would people want to pay the shoutout if the link is not included isn’t it? Well, this is happening so be sure to read it carefully.

After I was satisfied with the price I asked for the audience’s insight. This is also important because you can see all the page’s data.

Most pages will give you this data if you ask them. However if they hardly give it to you just leave them because they are probably a scammer.

As I mentioned earlier, most of the traffic for this page is coming from the US. You can see the stat on the top left side in the image above.

25.8% traffic is from the US and almost 90% of the traffic is men. So this is something that I’m looking for. It’s congruent with my affiliate offer.

Another thing that you want to look at is the traffic most active time. As you can see the most active time would be from 6pm to 3am.

It’s completely okay if you want to promote for 24 hours. But if you don’t have much capital to invest you can just pay for 12 hours.

That’s why this data is important so that you can see when you need to start the shoutout. So that you will only pay at the peak hours to get the most clicks.

After that I asked for his Paypal email to make the payment. While waiting for the payment to get approved I started to create my ad copy.

Create the shoutout

The first thing I need is the image of the product.

My advice is you need to study the Instagram page that you want to do the shoutout before choosing the image.

Take a look at the overall post on the page. What type of images do they use the most?

What is the theme color for most of the post? And what is the image style for most of the post?

The reason why I did this is because I don’t want my shoutout to look like an ad. People hate seeing ads.

That’s why I need to blend my ad with the rest of the posts in the page so that it will look like a normal post instead of an ad.

This is how most of the posts look like on the page. So I got a rough idea what type of image I need to use for my shoutout.

So what I did next is going to the affiliate JV page and the product page to grab some images. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any.

So I went to Google and I found the image below.

In case if you couldn’t find any suitable image from the affiliate page, you can use Pexel or Unsplash to get high quality images for your shoutout.

Both websites are free license stock images websites so you don’t have to give credit if you don’t want and you won't get any copyright strike.

I think this is perfect. It’s congruent with most of the posts in the page in terms of the image style and color.

So I decided to choose this image and start to do some editing.

For those of you who know how to use any graphic design software you can use it but if you don’t, do not to worry because you can head to Canva to create it for 100% free.

Canva is an online design tool that you can use to create logos, Instagram posts, Facebook posts, Pinterest pins, and a lot more.

It’s not only free but also very easy to use. You don’t have to have any skill or experience prior to using Canva.

So this is the image after I edited it. Basically, I just put some simple text to grab people’s attention to read more.

Here is the description for the post:

“How to build a small root cellar in your backyard with only $400 that's going to protect your life and preserve your supplies in the next pandemic & crisis.

Check the link in bio for FREE video (taken down after 12 hours)”

Here is how the story ad looks like.

As you can see for both ad copies I put the “watch FREE video”. This is important because people love free stuff.

If you offer them something free they will be more likely to take action. Give them some lower-hanging fruit stuff to make sure they take action.

For the description of the post, you can get it from the affiliate landing page. Take a look at the headline and sub-headline of the sales letter. That is the place you can get the most powerful headline to use as your description as well.

I literally copied and did some adjustments from the affiliate landing page.

After everything is set up it’s time to hand it over to the page.

Don’t forget to tell them when you want to start. As I mentioned prior I just want to promote for 12 hours so I asked him to start from 6 pm.

So the shoutout will end at 3 am. So I can get the most clicks from the most active time on this page.

So the last thing is the affiliate link. I went to Clickbank and searched for the product that I want to promote and clicked the promote button to start generating the link.

A small window popped up and then I clicked on the generate hoplinks button and next I clicked the button no 2 to copy my affiliate link.

So this is the link that I need to give to the page with the images and description. But I highly recommend you to shorten your link first before you give it to the page.

The affiliate link from Clickbank is too long. So it’s going to look so ugly and the fact that there’s a minimum number of words that you can put on Instagram's description.

So what I did was I shortened the link with the Bit.ly first. Bitly is a shortened URL and tracking website.

So instead of shortening your affiliate link you could also track the click you receive with Bitly.

This is how the link looks like after it shortened - https://bit.ly/bushcraftstuff

So this is how the ad looked like when it was live. And thank god after 12 hours of promoting it I was able to get a sale with one upsell.

It resulted in $51.23 as a Clickbank affiliate commission. As you can tell the cost for shoutout was $25.00. So I made $26.23 in profit.

I know $26.23 is not that much. But the most important thing is that this method works.

What I need to do is re-invest it back with a larger budget or repeating the exact same process with different offers.

The best part about this affiliate marketing for beginners tutorial is that it doesn’t require any skill or experience to get started.

What you only need is some capital which I'm pretty sure everyone has and follow all the steps I’ve laid out in this tutorial.

Let’s get started
